The art to building generational wealth.

The Overarching Problem

We live and work in systems that weren’t designed to be diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible. Acknowledging the inequity in the system is foundational and accepting the inherent bias, whether conscious or unconscious, will mobilize purposeful actions to address and start to close these gaps. When we talk about fighting racism and discrimination in Canada, results are expected nationally and modelled after globally. The connected global economy and ever expanding digitization and technology demands this and depicts an untethered connection.

The BwC Approach

The work at BwC is foundationally routed in institutions, governments and business partnering with non-profits to make quick, swift and measurable actions. When we talk about racism and diversity, we acknowledge the dependency on the economy and capitalist society. We are on a quest to increase awareness of wealth inequality in Canada and equip the BIPOC community with the knowledge, capacity, networks and connections to be stronger economic participants and thereby increase their wealth and financial position. Embracing the United Nations SDGs, we are creating a base for happier and healthier people, more equitable societies and more resilient economies.

LEGUP Secure Our Wealth initiative tackles the UN SDG#8 to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all LEGUP Wealth and Brothers Who Care.

Our program inspires a focus on impact investing, imploring wealth managers, corporations, entrepreneurs and nonprofits developing innovative solutions to the racial-wealth gap upheld through generational trauma, the information-wealth gap proliferated through complex systems and; the income-wealth gap further exploited by unconscious bias.

LEG-UP Secure Our Wealth project

The LEG-UP Secure Our Wealth project helps the BIPOC community participate in building a more sustainable society and feel confident about meeting their financial goals in a changing and ever evolving digital world. We are breaking negative generational cycles when it comes to financial behaviour, increasing financial health and working towards creating generational wealth. The project uses practical examples and provides information, tools and coaching to break the information, income and racial wealth gap in the financial system, allowing BIPOC citizens to create generational wealth.

The Psychology of Money

Mental, physical, nutritional and financial wellness are four key pillars of good health. However, Government of Canada (GOC) data reveals that for many Canadians, money worries are the greatest source of stress, more than work, personal health and relationships. According to the research, 48% of Canadians say they’ve lost sleep because of financial worries and 44% say it would be difficult to meet their financial obligations if their pay is late.

The Psychology of Money tackles issues relating to financial stress such as:
Managing household expenses
Dealing with high levels of debt
Living pay cheque to pay cheque
Struggling to save money for short and long-term goals
Dealing with unexpected expenses
GOC data also shows the deep impact of financial stress on our mental and physical health such as: Twice as likely to report poor overall health; Four times as likely to suffer from sleep problems, headaches and other illnesses; More likely to experience strain in your personal relationships. It can also lead to more serious health problems, such as: Heart disease; High blood pressure and; Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
It is expected that by 2030, depression could become the world’s top health problem. Understanding the undeniable connection between our financial wealth and health in communities with Black, Indigenous and People of Colour, the LEGUP project has set aggressive targets to change the story, perception and face of what wealth looks like in Canada. While LEGUP is cross industry, we are honing in on the banking and financial services industry to improve financial inclusion and diversity.

How LEGUP Helps

The LEGUP Wealth Symposium promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for young BIPOC professionals in areas 18+. We create excitement, eagerness and showcase shining examples of people who look like them exploiting their untapped potential. Our pilot LEGUP Mastermind, which included 14 core participants and periodic extension to 50+ community youth and professional providers, is already bearing fruit. It confirms the need for a strong BIPOC support network to establish, communicate and achieve incredible financial goals.

Our work to date indicates the urgent need to engage even a larger young professional base, bringing to light an environment where they can gather, network and ignite their incredible potential to set and achieve stretch goals. The symposium makes this happen. We will not only engage 250 young professionals in person, but selected streamed sessions through social media is expected to reach 50,000 Canadians across the country and positions BIPOC Canadians globally, as leaders in quest to reshape what wealth looks like. The young people we are engaging are a source of inspiration to Black, Indigenous and People of Colour in Canada and across the world. Our participants have told us that wealth, success and impact is bigger than themselves, that it is looking to create a multi-generational impact that will change the starting point of future generations.

Globalization

Globalization is at our front door. The notion that an organization can win locally and sustain it is unfathomable. We are placing the community and society on a national and international scale on the top of our priority lists, knowing that through the lens from which we operate, the products, services and the culture of our organization will be on display. LEGUP is a great way for us to establish a reputation as a leading Canadian institution in diversity, equity and inclusion and one that depends on an ecosystem of partners to make change happen. We are modelling that it takes sustained partnership and collaboration to make this happen and will have increased confidence with CRRF at our side.
